REASONS TO INVEST IN A LONDON ROOF TERRACE
Create an Eco-Friendly Urban Oasis
You want an eco-friendly solution. Materials are made from 80% recycled oceanic plastics and all water is recyclable.
You have no ground-level garden. Bring in the greenery, from trees and plants to grass and moss.
Improve Home Insulation & Energy Efficiency
You want improved air quality. Green roofs convert harmful particles into oxygen and purify the air. Better air quality can boost your mood and promote better health.
Add Premium Value to Your Property
You want to add real value. In a crowded property market, what better way to add unique value to your home?
You love nature. The steel and stone of the city can be claustrophobic. We’ll get you closer to nature.
Enjoy Unrivalled Views of the London Skyline
You love a great view. Wow visitors with a unique take on the iconic London skyline.
You want a garden that lasts. Your investment will last 50 years and extend the life of your flat roof.
You want to save money. The new microclimate in the space below the roof will save on electricity bills. You’ll be warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
You want your home to perform. You’ll enjoy a better fire rating and better ventilation, to help remove mould and damp.

Why should I choose Millboard over standard composite decking?
What exactly is the difference between the materials, and why do you recommend Millboard as the better choice?
While standard composite decking is a great improvement over traditional timber, it is fundamentally different from Millboard. Standard composites are made by mixing plastics with recycled wood fibres, whereas Millboard is entirely wood-free. We recommend Millboard as the ultimate premium choice for your roof or balcony for several key reasons:
100% Wood-Free (No Rot): Because standard composites still contain wood fibres, they can absorb moisture over time, leading to swelling or mould. Millboard is made from a polyurethane resin and mineral stone blend. It is completely impervious to water, meaning zero rot, even in the dampest UK weather.
Unrivalled Authenticity: Most composite boards are machine-extruded and can look noticeably artificial or plasticky. Millboard is hand-moulded from real oak planks and hand-coloured by craftsmen, giving your terrace the stunning, organic look of natural timber without the exhausting upkeep.
Superior Slip Resistance: Safety is paramount for elevated outdoor spaces. Millboard features a unique Lastane® top layer that provides exceptional grip—even when wet. Because it is non-porous, it also doesn’t support the slippery algae growth common on wood and standard composites.
Exceptional Stability: Traditional composites can expand and contract heavily as the temperature changes. Millboard has an incredibly low expansion rate (less than 0.1%) and is highly UV-stable, so it won’t aggressively fade, warp, or splinter in direct sunlight.
A Flawless Finish: Millboard uses an innovative hidden fixing system. The pliable surface layer actually flexes back over the screws after they are driven in, leaving a seamless finish with no visible hardware or pre-drilled holes.

Do I need planning permission?
Is planning permission required for balcony and terrace work?
You’ll probably need planning permission if you want to:
1 Build something new.
2 Make a major change to your building, such as building an extension.
3 Change the use of your building.
4 Work in a conservation area or the building is listed. To find out if your project will require planning permission, contact your local planning authority (LPA) through your local council.
-
Will I require a structural engineer?
The engineer ensures that the structural framework can carry these loads down to the foundation and safely into the ground.
In almost all jurisdictions, you cannot legally construct or significantly modify a building without a structural engineer’s stamp of approval. They ensure that the architectural plans comply with local and national building codes. City permitting offices rely on the engineer’s licensed seal as a legal guarantee that the structure meets all safety standards.
